Opinions are like...well you know...everyone has one

Hi There!!  Just wanted to share an experience with you that may help you in so many ways!  Perhaps you have been a victim of such a crime!!  Or perhaps this may help you "re-organize" your conversations in the future!!

I was "assaulted" recently by a "well meaning" "friend" regarding "my weight".  I know she didn't mean harm, but I also know that she was just not thinking.  People are so into themselves and their opinions and they just don't stop to think about the impact that their "well meaning" opinions have upon the recipient.  Here was the situation...

I was sitting at a table of approximately 8 ladies during a social luncheon.  Something came up about weight and my friend announced to the table that when she met me I "was beautiful" but now you have taken your weight loss thing over the edge"...indicating that I am too thin (I guess) and no longer beautiful.  This statement embarrassed the Hell out of me and made me VERY uncomfortable in front of several women whom I had just met.  My statement to "my friend" was that my weight is perfectly proportionate to my height and, yes, I have lost several pounds since I stopped working but I feel great and I am neither underweight nor overweight.  What I wanted to say was that now that so many people are overweight or obese, when we see someone within normal weight limits we think they are too skinny......sad statement!!

TIP:  Regardless of a person's weight (past or present), regardless of whether or not or or she has lost weight, it is in bad taste to bring up their weight loss in mixed company.  Weight loss is a personal health matter.  Use your head when addressing someone about their weight.  Like mother always said...."The best way to keep from inserting foot into mouth is to keep it shut...if you can't say anything good...don't say anything at all!!    Tsk Tsk to my well meaning, out of touch friend.
.
Advice:  Keep your opinions to yourself and just stick to the weather...

Weight loss and a healthy management of body weight is - unfortunately, becoming a thing of the past.  Everywhere I turn I see muffin tops, fat arms, bra bulge, cellulite....oh the horror!!  What used to be a size 14 is now a size 8....and women are falling for this clever marketing scam - that is the sadness of it all.  Do NOT be fooled by these marketing devils - look in the mirror and get a grip on reality!! Marilyn Monroe was a size 8........ARE YOU??  I bet not!!  Weight loss and weight management is at your fingertips - don't turn a blind eye to health.  Remember "The Golden Years" are already upon us - regardless of age.  Life is not fun without your good health - and good health cannot be accomplished if you are carrying around extra pounds that need to come off.  Start your weight loss plan TODAY and quit making wimpy excuses -  Life gets in the way of everything....don't let it get in the way of your health and happiness.  Remember - there are 365 days in each year and you have used 365 excuses for your fatness so STOP IT!!  Are you kidding me right now with your "too much stress" lame excuse??  Perhaps if you would shed that extra 20lbs you would be better equipped to handle the stress of life.  Stop being grouped with all the "fatties" out there!  Grow some inner strength and get your butt in gear.

High School Obesity

I've had the opportunity to "substitute teach" at our local high schools and junior high schools over the past year.  Now I am NOT a prude by a long shot.....but, with over 80% of the girls being overweight or obese, it is necessary for me to either cover my eyes or look the other way.  From what I have observed, the "in" style is short, short shorts.  In my day we called them Hot Pants - but then again, the girls that wore them were hot - and those who were not so hot knew enough to stick to their trusty cords.  Apparently, the overwhelming epidemic of obesity has clouded the judgement of young ladies and they must not realize that they are indeed fat - or they surely would make a wardrobe selection appropriate to their level of fatness.

And then there is that "glazed over" look in their eyes - both boys and girls - as they saunter lazily into class with their earphones plugged in, mouth breathing.  Oh yes, earphones/headphones are not allowed...but then again, rules are something from the far away past and following the rules is now not enforced.  The only flicker of life I see is an "in your face" angry defiance when corrected or given direction within the classroom setting.  When I asked a high school boy to go to his assigned class after the tardy bell (hat turned sideways, hanging on a young lady) - he retorted in an offensive posture:  "I don't need your attitude"......... Sadly, he does need my attitude.

Not that the 70's (when I attended high school) was an era of outstanding wardrobe and behavior on the part of the students - but at least when someone had that "glazed over" look in their eyes - we knew it was due to the influence of drugs.....not a pathetic disregard for life and authority as is seen today.

Approach Shots

Today is the third (and final) day of the Women's Club Championship golf tournament at South Hills Country Club.  I have the privilege and honor of being a participant.  I am in the third flight (there are three flights in descending order of handicap range) and so far I do believe I am in last place.  But NONETHELESS, I am happy to even qualify for such a prestigious event.  I played in it last year and my improvement is VAST!!  This July will mark the end of my second year of of playing golf and it has been an extraordinary journey - everything from learning "the ropes" of the process of booking tee times, club storage, rules & regulations, course edicate, the whole "social" network of my lady golfers with whom I have become networked, and of course learning how to make contact with that little tiny ball that sits there glaring at me....laughing while I'm crying.  Tough, tough game!!  I get frustrated with myself that my progress has (in my opinion) been slow, but COME ON!!!!  I've gone from a 49 handicap to a 35 in less than two years!!  That means my handicap has dropped 7 points each year - at this rate, next year at this time I will be a 28 hcp, and the year after (2014) I will be a 21 hcp....so what's so wrong with that?!?!?  Rome was not built in a day!!  Success at anything takes time, work, perseverance, drive, desire and....did I mention WORK!!  Ergo developing successful, lifetime weight management skills (you knew where I was going with this didn't you?)........

If you've been beating yourself up because you feel your progress or "success" is too slow - or non-existent, lighten up, sit back and analyze your approach.  Are you giving your plan to lose weight and keep it off time?  Have you been working at it everyday, every minute?  Do you have an attitude of perseverance and drive?  Do you even have the desire to take control of your weight?  Have you been visualizing yourself slender, fit and comfortable in your own skin?

Life is too short to be fat.......AND you have control of Becoming the person you know you can be.  Dig in, expect some pain and discomfort, keep driving forward and GO GET that inner strength that is deep WiTHIN You Now!®......  If I can do it - You can do it......

Last tip of the day -  If you don't golf, don't start.  It's expensive, time consuming and WAY TOO DIFFICULT!!  Put your walking shoes on and get moving instead - you will not regret this decision :)))  (Wish me luck today - tee time 9:32am).....

Exercise is great....yadda, yadda...BUT if ya wanna lose weight ya gotta.....

YES...I AGREE....EXERCISE IS THE ULTIMATE HEALTH SOLUTION AND EVERYONE SHOULD DO IT EVERYDAY......BUT.....if you want to lose weight and keep it off you must do the following:

  • Learn to expect, identify and fight "the urge" when it rears its ugly head and it will no matter how AMAZING your food plan.
  • Learn to ignore, shut out and shut down the outside influences that want you to fail (Friendly Fire):  Friends, Family, and Strangers who are fat and miserable themselves and attempt to trip you up by telling you things such as:  "You're too thin already", "You look great the way you are", and the most famous:  "You've gotta treat yourself sometime"... These tactics may or may not be intentional on their part but WHO CARES????  IGNORE, be thin and smile as they sit there stuffed into their size 10 jeans and their loose fitting tops that they think are hiding their pot bellies, muffin tops and love handles.
  • Learn to stay focused every minute, every day, every week, every month, every passing year....know that "it" never ends and everyday brings an entire set of new challenges.
  • Learn to Become "goal oriented".....use self hypnosis, visual imagery and heavy day dreaming to get a picture of the "YOU" that you can and will Become....

Science has proven that those who imagine success - achieve success.

Quit excusing your fat rolls, quit hiding your cellulite, start looking great and feeling great - If I can do it.....YOU can do it!

Another Monday

Notice how Mondays seem to crop up every seven days or so?  Boring....boring.  Don't let the first day of the work week get you down.  Be thankful that you have a job and a paycheck and another "structured" day....let Monday work FOR you - not against you.  Plan ahead for Tuesday - another opportunity for success.

Think as FAR in advance as you can possibly think when it comes to ingestion of food.  Plan for today, tomorrow and every Monday to come.  We are so blessed to be alive, we re so blessed to have the gift of life.  Take care of YOUR life by eating healthfully, planning ahead, fighting the "urge" head on and Becoming the Person you know you can be.

Be in Charge of YOUR Behavior -  YOU are in charge.  Tell your opposers to "talk to the hand"....

Believe in YOU --   I do.....  Dr. Stacey
